The United States Supreme Court gave audience to Dukes vs. Wal-Mart, a class action suit filed on behalf of about 1.6 million women who are alleged to have been victims of the firmís sexual discrimination practices.
Stephanie Odle revealed that she filed the lawsuit against Wal-Mart more than ten years ago after finding out that one of her male coworkers with less experience and fewer years of employment was earning $10,000 more than her annual salary. Odle revealed that the action she took was the most difficult she had ever done throughout her life.
Odle who is currently an entrepreneur in Norman, Oklahoma stated that she had been clueless at the time of the filing of the suit in 2000 that there were thousands of other female employees with similar experiences against the supermarket chain.
She stated that sheís proud of the action taken with her other colleagues and the fact that the case has reached the Supreme Court speaks volumes of their struggles. Documents from the court revealed that the Wal-Mart class action suit now has 1.6 million plaintiffs seeking compensation from the retail giant for sexual discrimination against them.
Odle didnít attend the hearing alone but decided to take her daughter, 14 to Washington. She stated that she had vowed to her child that she will never have to suffer any form of sexual discrimination like she experienced while working at Wal-Mart and she wants to pave the way for other women currently working or girls who are growing up.
Wal-Mart has refuted any form of discrimination against women employees and according to Odle, even though she has sued the firm; she is still very fond of it. The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the case in June 2011.
